Avoidance of Fiber Associated with Risk of Flare

I published my final research article just before I retired

Title: Avoidance of Fiber Is Associated With Greater Risk of Crohn’s Disease Flare in a 6-Month Period

Authors: Brotherton CS, Martin CA, Long MD, Kappelman MD, Sandler RS.

Journal: Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2015 Dec 31. pii: S1542-3565(15)01713-9.

doi: 10.1016/j.cgh.2015.12.029. [Epub ahead of print]

In this article, my co-authors and I reported our findings after analyzing fiber data collected from 1,619 participants who completed a diet survey in the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s Partners Internet cohort study. We included participants only if they were in remission at baseline and we found that participants with Crohn’s disease who reported avoiding fiber were more likely to experience a flare within 6 months than participants who did not report avoiding fiber. This same association did not hold up with ulcerative colitis.

As the culmination of my research years, this article was a good one to help me go out strong. Here is what Altmetric said about this article:

Altmetric has tracked 4,963,958 research outputs across all sources so far. Compared to these this one has done particularly well and is in the 96th percentile: it’s in the top 5% of all research outputs ever tracked by Altmetric.
